Yesterday I visited my friends at Natural Xpression Salon right here in Atlanta to get a mini-makeover on my do. Warm weather is right around the corner and I wanted a warm pop of color not to mention a MUCH needed trim! The last time I had color on my hair was when I did an at home Shea Moisture box color (demo/full review below). I loved the color! But this time around, I wanted a professional hand AND I didn't want whole head color.
I know, I KNOW. There is a HUGE stigma among naturals and professional stylists that denotes that a stylist will "ruin" your hair. That is not the case. If anything it's unusual to have a huge variance between what you want and what you don't want. It's important to discuss throughly and at length with your stylists your likes an dislikes, having reference pictures of models with similar hair types can also help your stylists visualize what you (the client) want! For every amazing salon experience, there may be a few not so great ones. Peep the video below of my salon experience!
Whether due to lack of communication, planning, flagrant stylist improvisation or otherwise--think of it like a test. The more you know about the stylist and their expertise, the more aligned results you may experience. My stylist (named Poka) started off by assessing the current state of my hair and then beginning the color process. He used lightener to prep my hair for the golden brown color that ultimately gave my hair the dark-to-light gradient effect I was going for.
After rinsing out the lightener, I had an amazing deep conditioning treatment with steam before styling. Poka prepped and styled my hair with the brand Bella Curls which is a hair line that boasts all Coconut-infused products!
For the finishing style, we decided to use a mix of orange (medium-sized) and blue (small) flexi-rods then I sat under the hair dryer for about 45 minutes. The end results were super soft and bouncy curls! With the fresh trim, my ends looked (and felt!) super sleek. I am SO glad that he cut off all of that dead weight!

I have a new love affair and appreciation for natural hair stylists. I'll be honest and say in the past, I would NEVER let anyone cut my hair unless I came up out of my body, possessed another human, and did it MYSELF. (I'm extra, y'all know this. *shrugs*) I am throughly impressed with Natural Xpression Salon and Poka!
